Producing Planning Knowledge: How Professional PhD Candidates Bridge Research–Practice Divides

Abstract This paper addresses an important, but under-studied, pathway for knowledge production in the field of urban planning: practitioner engaging with academia through writing a PhD. Drawing on our own experiences doctoral mentoring, dialogue PhD candidates, we reflect questions and challenges this form raises. The aims to extend planning theory’s recognition ‘multiple epistemologies’ (Sandercock, 2003) deeper understanding how professionals as authors lead translation experiential into academic knowledge. Understanding why is so difficult actually (co)produce should us not only better also critical reflection rigorous relevant defined within academia.
